Company Performance Highlights
Safety, Service, and Operational Excellence supports the Company’s long-term initiative to grow its freight volumes. Together as a team, we are focused on achieving the best safety record in the industry and being known for superior service, grounded in operational excellence which, in turn, drives growth.
Safety.2024 was a transformational year on our journey to becoming the safest railroad. Our strategy is focused on four pillars, Injury Prevention, Leverage Technology, Situational Awareness Testing, and Peer-to-Peer Engagement, as more fully described in the 2024 Business Highlights section on page 44. The focus on these four pillars is driving results. For 2024, our personal injury rate (the number of reportable injuries for every 200,000 employee-hours worked) was down by 23% and our derailment incident rate (the number of reportable derailment incidents per million train miles) was down 20% compared to 2023.
Service. Service Performance Index (SPI) (a ratio of the service customers are currently receiving relative to the best monthly performance over the last three years) for both intermodal and manifest products improved 2 and 4 points, respectively, compared to 2023. Throughout the year, we improved network fluidity as reflected in 2% faster freight car velocity and record terminal dwell which improved 3% from 2023.
Operational Excellence. Network performance throughout 2024 was strong. While we experienced some powerful weather events in the second quarter and a second half unexpected surge in international intermodal shipments, most of our operating metrics improved year-over-year. We maintained a resource buffer that allowed us to strategically integrate crews, locomotives, and freight cars into the network to efficiently handle the growth and recover from the weather events.
Union Pacific was the only Class I railroad to be named a Sustainability Yearbook Member by S&P Global. This recognition and our repeated inclusion in the JUST Capital 100 demonstrates our continued commitment to sustainability.
Highlights of the Company's 2024 financial and operational performance include:
| For the full year 2024, net income was $6.7 BILLIONor $11.09 per diluted share, up 6% compared to full year 2023 net income of $6.4 billion or $10.45 per diluted share | Our reportable personal injury rate of 0.90 per 200,000 employee-hours improved 23% from 2023 | Our reportable derailment incident rate of 2.17 improved 20% from 2023 |
|---|---|---|
| Operating revenue of $24.3 BILLION was up 1% driven by increased volume and core pricing gains, partially offset by lower fuel surcharge revenue, unfavorable business mix, and lower other revenue. Operating income of $9.7 BILLION increased 7% from 2023 | Our operating ratio for 2024 was 59.9%Improving 2.4 points from 2023 Freight car velocity improved 2% and average terminal dwell improved3%compared to 2023 Service Performance Index (SPI) IMPROVEDcompared to 2023. Intermodal SPI improved 2 points in 2024 at the same time international volume surged, and Manifest SPI improved 4 points | Locomotive productivity improved 5%in 2024 compared to 2023 driven by improved network fluidity and asset utilization Workforce productivity improved 6%in 2024 as average daily car miles increased 2% and average employees decreased 4% compared to 2023 |

How We Disclose Our Sustainability Progress
Last year, we updated our sustainability disclosure strategy, combining our three separate reports (The Climate Action Plan, We Are One Report, and the Building America Report) into one consolidated report, the Building America Report, covering our sustainability initiatives. Combining our sustainability disclosures and data in one report makes it easier for stakeholders to locate, bolstering our commitment to transparency.
Union Pacific is transitioning to publishing The Building America Report every other year instead of annually. However, we remain committed to transparency and will continue to provide annual updates on our sustainability data metrics to keep stakeholders informed of our ongoing progress and initiatives.
To guide our sustainability disclosures, we reference several reporting standards and frameworks, including the Global Reporting Initiative’s (GRI) reporting standards, the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB). Environmental disclosures also incorporate the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) framework.

ENVIRONMENTAL
Union Pacific is committed to protecting the environment now and for future generations through our efforts in evaluating and improving our environmental management systems and operating efficiency while developing and investing in technology to reduce our environmental footprint. We are dedicated to sustainability and providing safe, reliable, fuel-efficient and environmentally responsible freight transportation for our customers.
2024 Environmental Highlights Include:
| Customer Emission Tracking | We are overhauling our emissions tracking process to allow customers to monitor their Scope 3 emissions for shipments with Union Pacific. Instead of basing this information on high-level industry averages, we will instead be tracking various relevant metrics to calculate emissions down to an individual shipment level. |
| Hybrid Locomotives | Union Pacific is investing in hybrid locomotives as part of its commitment to sustainability and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The first of these locomotives, developed in collaboration with ZTR, was deployed in 2024. They work by combining traditional diesel engines with battery power to improve fuel efficiency and lower emissions. |
| Locomotive Modernizations | In 2024, we modernized 160 older locomotives and plan to modernize an additional 240 locomotives in 2025 through 2026. These modernizations are estimated to provide approximately 350 tons of carbon reduction per locomotive per year, and the total order for 600 locomotives is expected to realize approximately 210,000 tons in annual emission reduction. |
| Renewable Diesel and Biofuels | Increasing our utilization of renewable fuels is a key lever in our decarbonization initiatives. In 2024, Union Pacific became the first Class 1 railroad to join the Clean Fuels Alliance and received the Clean Fuels Alliance's Industry Partnership Award. Our year-end total utilization of biofuels for 2024 was 5.2%. |
| The Nature Conservancy Partnership Update | Our partnership with The Nature Conservancy to support three separate nature-based solutions projects based in Nebraska, California and Texas officially launched in 2023 and continued throughout 2024. Project goals include grassland and wetland restoration, groundwater recharge, threatened species habitat conservation and community education. |
SOCIAL
Investing in our Workforce is one of the five areas of concentration in our Building a Sustainable Future 2030 strategy. We are dedicated to providing an environment where employees feel valued, engaged and inspired.
2024 Social Highlights Include:
| EAP Benefits Upgrade | Our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) now covers all employees and eligible dependents, including domestic partners, regardless of their healthcare plan or if they opt out of Union Pacific's coverage. This enhanced benefit provides up to six cost-free counseling sessions with a master's level licensed counselor. This support aims to promote the overall well-being and quality of life for Union Pacific employees and their families. |
| Maternity Leave Enhancement | Union Pacific has enhanced its maternity leave policy, increasing paid maternity leave for birth mothers from eight to twelve weeks. This change underscores our commitment to supporting our employees and their families. |
| How We Win Together | Last year, Union Pacific launched its How We Win Together Training. This training provides an interactive experience to build every employee’s understanding of the industry, focusing on strategic priorities. To date, more than 30,000 employees have successfully completed the training. |
| Retention and Employee Voice | With retention of nearly 90%, Union Pacific strives to create an environment where everyone has the opportunity to succeed. UP uses a third-party confidential survey platform to track its culture. Last year, engagement increased 5 points, manager effectiveness increased 11 points and belonging increased 6 points. |
| Safety Culture Assessment | In 2024, we conducted a comprehensive Safety Culture Assessment, gathering feedback from thousands of field employees through surveys, focus groups, and listening sessions. This initiative, supported by a neutral third-party company, identified numerous improvement opportunities, including enhanced training protocols and resource optimization. |
