EX-99.1 · Open Pit
Open Pit
The pit slopes prohibit the reclamation practice of growth media placement and revegetation due to access logistics and safety concerns. As such, there are no plans to attempt soil placement or revegetation within the open pit. MMC is requesting a reclamation exemption under NAC 519A.250 for the open pit. Access to the open pit will be precluded by the construction of post-mining safety barriers. These barriers will be located at access points and on ramps present at the time of closure to prevent entrance. Pit berms will be constructed along the perimeter of the pit, where necessary, to limit public access and deter livestock and signage will be placed at intervals along the berms. Pit benches will erode and fail over time which should effectively break up linear features and create naturally appearing scree and talus slopes.
Upon cessation of mining and dewatering activities, and precluding the placement of pit backfill, a lake will form in the Buffalo Valley Pit. MMC’s water rights are of sufficient quantity to cover the post-closure consumptive use associated with evaporation from the pit lake in the case that the pit is not backfilled.
