Current report

For the three months ended March 31, 2025, the NYSE Arca market value of each Share decreased from $29.42 per Share to $28.55 per Share. The Share price low and high for the three months ended March 31, 2025 and related change from the Share price on December 31, 2024 was as follows: Shares traded at a low of $28.26 per Share (-3.94%) on March 11, 2025 and a high of $29.85 per Share (+1.46%) on January 13, 2025. The total return for the Fund on a market value basis was -2.96%.

Current report

The U.S. dollar moved lower in the first quarter of 2025 leading to losses for the Fund. This marked a sharp reversal from the strong rally to end 2024, when the incoming U.S. administration's tariff policy was expected to have a disproportionate adverse effect on the currency of the United States' trading partners, in turn boosting the U.S. dollar. Inflation predictions also led the markets to re-evaluate the Federal Reserve’s easing plans, with the potential to leave rates higher for longer. However, those factors are now hurting the U.S. dollar; tariffs and stagflation fears have upended market confidence in the U.S., while the Federal Reserve may still reduce interest rates by 0.50% in 2025 (lower interest rates reduce demand for the U.S. dollar). In contrast, the euro and other European currencies are being propped up by major defense and infrastructure spending plans, and the outlook looks brighter for the Japanese yen, with the Bank of Japan in a rate hiking cycle as the rest of the world’s major economies pulled back.

Current report

Previous report

For the three months ended September 30, 2024, the NYSE Arca market value of each Share decreased from $29.14 per Share to $28.18 per Share. The Share price low and high for the three months ended September 30, 2024 and related change from the Share price on June 30, 2024 was as follows: Shares traded at a low of $27.95 per Share (-4.08%) on August 27, 2024 and a high of $29.14 per Share (0.00%) on July 1, 2024. The total return for the Fund on a market value basis was -3.29%.

Previous report

The US dollar was heavily pressured in the third quarter of 2024, leading to losses for the Fund. In addition to the highly anticipated Federal Reserve easing cycle which officially kicked off in September – the central bank announced a larger-than-expected interest rate cut of 0.50% – the Bank of Japan also surprised the market with a rate hike in August. Higher interest rates generally boost a country’s currency and vice versa; in this case, the events boosted the Japanese yen and pressured the US dollar.

Previous report

For the three months ended September 30, 2023, the NYSE Arca market value of each Share increased from $28.40 per Share to $29.73 per Share. The Share price low and high for the three months ended September 30, 2023 and related change from the Share price on June 30, 2023 was as follows: Shares traded at a low of $27.56 per Share (-2.96%) on July 13, 2023 and a high of $29.87 per Share (+5.18%) on September 27, 2023. The total return for the Fund on a market value basis was +4.68%.

Previous report

The U.S. dollar showed strength in the third quarter of 2023, up 3%, the most since the third quarter 2022, leading to gains for the Fund. The euro, Japanese yen, British pound, Canadian dollar, Swedish krona and Swiss franc all depreciated against the U.S. dollar. European currencies were pressured by a weakening Eurozone economic outlook and relatively more bearish central banks, while the Bank of Japan kept to its ultra-dovish policies, keeping global interest rate differentials with the Japanese yen wide open. Compared to the other currencies, the Canadian dollar fared better, supported by the strong rebound in energy commodities – the country is a major exporter of crude oil.

Previous report

For the three months ended September 30, 2023, the NAV of each Share increased from $28.39 per Share to $29.71 per Share. Rising currency futures contract prices for long DX Contracts during the three months ended September 30, 2023 contributed to a 3.49% increase in the level of the Index and to a 4.88% increase in the level of the Long Index-TRTM. The total return for the Fund on a NAV basis was +4.65%.

The total return for the Fund on a market value basis was +6.90%.

Previous report

The U.S. dollar posted a small gain in the first three quarters of 2023 leading to gains for the Fund – while it moved lower during the first quarter, prices rebounded during the second and third quarters. To start the year, the U.S. dollar retreated rapidly on anticipation for a dovish pivot in the Federal Reserve’s interest rate hike plans. However, in February, expectations for the Federal Reserve turned more hawkish amid stickier-than-expected US inflation and a strong US labor market. In March, while the dollar initially continued higher on the financial sector turmoil, returning speculation for a softer Federal Reserve stance, amid the heightened uncertainty, sent prices lower to end the quarter. Despite continued talks for a pause in US interest rate hikes, which actually happened in June, the U.S. dollar remained relatively well supported in the second quarter on hawkish Federal Reserve comments. In the third quarter, the U.S. dollar experienced renewed strength amid US economic resilience and the Federal Reserve’s more hawkish, higher-for-longer rhetoric.

The total return for the Fund on a NAV basis was +6.83%.

Net income (loss) for the nine months ended September 30 2023 was $39.0 million, primarily resulting from $32.5 million of income, net realized gain (loss) of $(1.6) million, net change in unrealized gain (loss) of $13.3 million and net operating expenses of $5.1 million.

When the Fund enters into futures contracts, the Fund is exposed to credit risk that the counterparty to the contract will not meet its obligations. The counterparty for futures contracts traded on United States and on most foreign futures exchanges is the clearing house associated with the particular exchange. In general, clearing houses are backed by their corporate members who may be required to share in the financial burden resulting from the nonperformance by one of their members and, as such, is designed to disperse and mitigate the credit risk posed by any one member. In cases where the clearing house is not backed by the clearing members (i.e., some foreign exchanges), it may be backed by a consortium of banks or other financial institutions. There can be no assurance that any counterparty, clearing member or clearinghouse will meet its obligations to the Fund.

Previous wording

The US dollar performed positively in the first three quarters of 2024, leading to positive performance for the Fund. While the dollar had fallen to end 2023 on expectations for imminent rate cuts, the Federal Reserve stuck to its higher-for-longer rhetoric through the first two quarters of the year as US inflation proved stickier than expected. This forced the market to repeatedly delay Federal Reserve easing expectations at the same time that many global economies including Switzerland, Sweden, Canada, and the European Central Bank (ECB) kicked off their rate-cutting cycles. However, the greenback moved lower in the third quarter with the Federal Reserve joining the others, announcing its first interest rate cut in September. Furthermore, the Bank of Japan surprised the market with a rate hike in August, sending the Japanese yen higher.
