Current report

For the three months ended March 31, 2025, the NYSE Arca market value of each Share increased from $18.56 per Share to $19.59 per Share. The Share price low and high for the three months ended March 31, 2025 and related change from the Share price on December 31, 2024 was as follows: Shares traded at a low of $18.47 per Share (-0.48%) on March 13, 2025, and a high of $20.32 per Share (+9.48%) on January 15, 2025. The total return for the Fund on a market value basis was +5.55%.

Current report

Energy commodities moved higher in the first quarter of 2025, led mostly by gains in Natural Gas. Front month Natural Gas futures ended the quarter 10% higher but price action was volatile, swinging in a range of more than 45% from peak to trough. Several cold spells through the winter season left heating demand stronger than expected, leading to notable inventory draws in the U.S. A bright outlook for liquified natural gas (LNG) exports also supported the commodity. The other strong performer in the Fund was Gasoline as winter refinery maintenance went underway, helping to tighten inventories. While Crude Oil ended flat on the quarter, prices were volatile throughout the quarter. Crude Oil prices initially rallied in January on the prior U.S. administration's farewell sanctions on Russian oil and gas but then retreated as ceasefire developments provided relief on the geopolitical front. The new U.S. administration's “drill, baby, drill” plans raised U.S. supply expectations, tariff headlines drove a risk-off move, and OPEC announced it would be gradually bringing back production. Oil prices recovered significantly in March as the U.S. imposed a 25% tariff on any country buying Venezuelan oil and/or gas and issued fresh sanctions on Chinese refineries processing Iranian Crude Oil.

Current report

For the three months ended March 31, 2024, the NYSE Arca market value of each Share increased from $19.19 per Share to $20.71 per Share. The Share price low and high for the three months ended March 31, 2024 and related change from the Share price on December 31, 2023 was as follows: Shares traded at a low of $19.10 per Share (-0.47%) on January 2, 2024, and a high of $20.97 per Share (+9.25%) on March 19, 2024. The total return for the Fund on a market value basis was +7.92%.

Current report

Energy was generally higher in the first three months of 2024. Crude Oil prices gained as escalating tensions in the Middle East and Ukraine raised supply disruption risk. In addition to geopolitics, an improving macro backdrop amid a resilient U.S. economy and anticipated Federal Reserve easing also supported broader risk assets like energy. In terms of front month performance, gasoline was the standout, up over 30% on disruptions in Russia’s refinery infrastructure and tightening U.S. stockpiles ahead of the summer driving season. Natural Gas was the persistent laggard with front month prices dropping another 30% on ample inventories and warmer-than-usual weather, reducing heating demand.

Current report

For the three months ended March 31, 2025, the NAV of each Share increased from $18.52 per Share to $19.58 per Share. Rising commodity futures contract prices for Brent Crude Oil, Light Sweet Crude Oil, RBOB Gasoline, Ultra-Low Sulphur Diesel and Natural Gas during the three months ended March 31, 2025, contributing to an overall 4.91% increase in the level of the Index and to a 6.02% increase in the level of the DBIQ-OY Energy TR™. The total return for the Fund on a NAV basis was +5.72%.

Returns for the Three and Nine Months Ended September 30, 2024 and 2023

Previous report

For the three months ended September 30, 2024, the NYSE Arca market value of each Share decreased from $20.89 per Share to $18.58 per Share. The Share price low and high for the three months ended September 30, 2024 and related change from the Share price on June 30, 2024 was as follows: Shares traded at a low of $17.79 per Share (-14.84%) on September 10, 2024, and a high of $21.32 per Share (+2.06%) on July 3, 2024. The total return for the Fund on a market value basis was -11.06%.

Previous report

Energy commodities were pressured in the third quarter of 2024 with all commodities except natural gas posting losses. There were several bearish drivers including low refining margins decreasing demand for crude oil and expectations for a second Trump term as president who is seen as bearish for energy given his stated plans to increase domestic production. Bearish sentiment on China also fueled demand concerns amid expectations for a supply glut in 2025 and OPEC’s spare capacity overhang. Rising geopolitical tensions and the start of the Federal Reserve interest rate easing cycle, as well as the surprise stimulus from China in September did provide some support, but gains were short lived; the market remained in wait-and-see mode for any actual oil supply disruptions in the Middle East and follow through on Chinese stimulus measures. Natural gas, however, did gain on heightened geopolitical concerns in September, but also fluctuated throughout the quarter on changing weather forecasts.

Previous report

For the three months ended September 30, 2023, the NYSE Arca market value of each Share increased from $19.80 per Share to $23.42 per Share. The Share price low and high for the three months ended September 30, 2023 and related change from the Share price on June 30, 2023 was as follows: Shares traded at a low of $19.65 per Share (-0.78%) on July 3, 2023, and a high of $24.26 per Share (+22.50%) on September 14, 2023. The total return for the Fund on a market value basis was +18.28%.

Previous report

Energy commodities posted strong returns in the third quarter of 2023. Crude oil front month prices gained nearly 30% as Saudi Arabia and Russia both indicated that they would continue to limit oil supply through the end of the year, helping the global oil market return to a deficit in July. Demand also came in stronger than expected in China and several non-traditional consuming regions like Latin America and Africa. While gasoline also gained in July, prices retreated through the rest of the quarter on stock builds in the US and Europe and weakening demand following the summer driving season. US natural gas was another weak spot for the sector with prices pressured by the persisting supply overhang. Finally, an improving macro sentiment supported by increased confidence that the Federal Reserve was nearing the end of its rate hike cycle further helped energy commodities recover over the quarter.

Previous report

For the three months ended September 30, 2024, the NAV of each Share decreased from $20.87 per Share to $18.56 per Share. Falling commodity futures contract prices for Brent Crude Oil, Light Sweet Crude Oil, RBOB Gasoline and Ultra-Low Sulphur Diesel were partially offset by rising commodity futures contract prices Natural Gas during the three months ended September 30, 2024, contributing to an overall 12.14% decrease in the level of the Index and to a 10.97% decrease in the level of the DBIQ-OY Energy TR™. The total return for the Fund on a NAV basis was -11.07%.

FOR THE NINE MONTHS ENDED SEPTEMBER 30, 2024 COMPARED TO THE NINE MONTHS ENDED SEPTEMBER 30, 2023

Previous report

For the nine months ended September 30, 2024, the NYSE Arca market value of each Share decreased from $19.19 per Share to $18.58 per Share. The Share price low and high for the nine months ended September 30, 2024 and related change from the Share price on December 31, 2023 was as follows: Shares traded at a low of $17.79 per Share (-7.32%) on September 10, 2024, and a high of $21.52 per Share (+12.12%) on April 12, 2024. The total return for the Fund on a market value basis was -3.18%.

Previous report

Energy commodities performed negatively in the first three quarters of 2024, with the largest detractors being NY harbor ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) and natural gas. Crude oil prices gained in the first quarter as escalating tensions in the Middle East and Russia/Ukraine raised supply concerns; front month prices ended the first half of the year up around 15%. However, prices were pressured in the third quarter by low refining margins decreasing crude demand, the bearish “Trump trade,” expectations for a supply glut in 2025, and the OPEC spare capacity overhang. While heightened geopolitical turmoil, the Federal Reserve's interest rate easing kickoff and the surprise China stimulus boosted overall sentiment in September, those gains were quickly returned as the market remained in wait-and-see mode. Natural gas was the laggard in the first quarter but made a strong comeback in May through mid-June and August through September as forecasted heatwaves and boiling tensions in the Middle East triggered a wave of short coverings.

Previous report

For the nine months ended September 30, 2023, the NYSE Arca market value of each Share increased from $22.65 per Share to $23.42 per Share. The Share price low and high for the nine months ended September 30, 2023 and related change from the Share price on December 31, 2022 was as follows: Shares traded at a low of $18.57 per Share (-18.02%) on May 3, 2023, and a high of $24.26 per Share (+7.11%) on September 14, 2023. The total return for the Fund on a market value basis was +3.40%.

Previous report

Energy commodities were up slightly in the first three quarters of 2023 with the bulk of the gains coming in the third quarter from crude oil; natural gas and NY Harbor Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) were the detractors. In the first quarter, US natural gas prices went into freefall, pressured by persistently warm temperatures in both the US and Europe. While prices did recover in the second and third quarter on hotter-than-expected weather forecasts and a broad energy rally, it remained down over 35% year-to-date. Diesel prices fell in the first quarter with Europe boosting imports of Russian supplies ahead of the February 5th ban and the weakness continued into the second quarter, though prices recovered in the third quarter leaving the commodity flat year-to-date. Crude oil prices had also plunged sharply in the first half of the year as macro recession concerns remained top of mind and China’s recovery continued to disappoint. However, prices recovered significantly in June and through the third quarter as Saudi Arabian and Russian supply curbs brought the global oil market back to a deficit and demand outperformed expectations. Macro sentiment also improved amid US economic resilience and a slowdown in Federal Reserve interest rate hikes, supporting broader risk appetite.

Previous wording

When the Fund enters into futures contracts, the Fund is exposed to credit risk that the counterparty to the contract will not meet its obligations. The counterparty for futures contracts traded on United States and on most foreign futures exchanges is the clearing house associated with the particular exchange. In general, clearing houses are backed by their corporate members who may be required to share in the financial burden resulting from the nonperformance by one of their members and, as such, is designed to disperse and mitigate the credit risk posed by any other one member. In cases where the clearing house is not backed by the clearing members (i.e., some foreign exchanges), it may be backed by a consortium of banks or other financial institutions. There can be no assurance that any counterparty, clearing member or clearinghouse will meet its obligations to the Fund.
