Current report

Crude oil ended 2024 slightly higher. Prices gained as escalating tensions in the Middle East and between Russia and Ukraine raised supply concerns and Federal Reserve interest rate easing expectations grew, ending the first half of the year up around 15%. However, crude oil was pressured in the third quarter by low refining margins decreasing crude demand, the bearish Trump trade, expectations for a supply glut in 2025, and the OPEC spare capacity overhang. While heightened geopolitical turmoil, the Federal Reserve's interest rate easing kickoff and the surprise Chinese stimulus boosted overall sentiment in September, those gains faded as the market remained in wait-and-see mode. The fourth quarter was slightly positive for crude oil due to escalating Middle East tensions but headwinds from President Trump’s tariff and energy policy plans limited the upside.

Previous report

Despite the pull back towards the end of the second quarter of the year through the third quarter due to intensifying recession fears, the Fund managed to sustain a gain of over 12% in 2022. Snowballing supply concerns fueled by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the resulting sanctions measures, most notably the EU’s ban of Russian seaborne oil imports, sent front month WTI crude oil prices into triple digit territory in the second quarter. However, prices then seesawed throughout the second half of the year as developments in the Russian oil price cap discussions, OPEC+ actions, US strategic petroleum reserve (SPR) releases, Russo-Ukraine war, China’s zero-COVID policies, Federal Reserve rate hikes and other market drivers led to risk aversion, keeping investors on the sidelines waiting for clarity/direction.
